Realism and Genre in 19th Century Irish Art

image001A  talk  by Peter Murray, Director Crawford Art Gallery

Venue:
at Alliance Francaise de Cork Gallery
Date: Tuesday 15th October
Time: 6pm
Admission free  – all welcome!
Ireland in the nineteenth century was a country of contrasts, between extreme wealth and extreme poverty. Artists, both British and Irish, depicted both the well-to-do, and also the poorest members of society. Their paintings, drawings and prints give an insight into both the realities of life at the time, and also provide information on how people wished Ireland to be seen. The works of art, when compared with texts from the period, give a vivid picture of social life, sport, music and dance, and also the hardships of working on the land.
