EUROPEAN SYMPOSIUM OF CORK
« EUROPE : INTERNATIONAL POWER »
A COMMON REFLEXION ON THE FUTURE OF EUROPE
AFTER THE REFERENDUM ON THE LISBON TREATY IN IRELAND
Organized by the Alliance Française of Cork
As part as the French presidency of the European Union
On Octobre 8, 2008, at the University College Cork
under the high patronage of Hans-Gert PöTTERING
President of the European Parliament
Following the example of many Alliances Françaises in Europe, which promote debate of ideas, the Alliance Française de CORK has great pleasure and also the honor to contribute to the full success of the French Presidency of the European Union.
The outcome of Lisbon treaty referendum in Ireland, on 12 June 2008, illustrates the lack of appropriation of the European political project by the population. However, there is today a strong need for a powerful Europe, able to protect citizens in a world where uncertainty is everywhere and in which we will have to summon up our strengths so as to be in a favourable position to tackle international issues.
After the great success of its last year’s Symposium entitled “The Challenge of Europe for our Century – towards a Union of Pragmatism and Vision – Setting the Scene”, the Alliance française of Cork organizes again this year within the prestigious confines of the University College Cork (UCC) a European symposium, which aim is to carry on the crucial debate on Europe and its place into the world. This significant event comes within the scope of the French presidency of the European Union as well as the European Cultural Season.
At the end of the meeting, an executive overview will be drawn and submitted to the highest Irish and French authorities. We will endeavour to bring out practical proposals that could help politician leaders to reinforce the European leadership into main multilateral negotiations.
This event is supported by the European cultural Season, organized during the French Presidency of the European Union (July 1st – Dec. 31st, 2008)
The 2008 European Symposium programme is extremely rich. It displays our humanist ambition as Alliance Française, to promote Europe by fostering intercultural dialogue and organising debates with European citizens and distinguished speakers from all over the world.
