Hold the Front Page! Irish Politics and French Press: an Illustrated Presentation

Image 1

A talk by Prof. Grace Neville

Venue: Alliance Française de Cork Galerie

Date: Wednesday 25th November 2015

Time: 6.30pm

People in Ireland are generally unaware of the deep interest in Ireland and in Irish politics that existed in France especially from the nineteenth century onwards. This fascination peaked at various points, most notably the Great Famine of the 1840s, the 1916 Rising, the 1920 hunger strike and death of the Lord Mayor of Cork, Terence MacSwiney, and the Northern Troubles from the late 1960s onwards.

This illustrated talk will focus on the years between 1916 and the early 1920s. It will analyse the photographs, drawings and illustrations lavishly used by the French press throughout this period in order to represent the major political events of the day in Ireland to the wider French public.

Admission free, all welcome!
