Best Holiday Spots in France – Foodie Destinations [5 of 5]

When we think about France, inevitably we think of food and, of course, wine – food is something many of us travel for and even bring back home as souvenirs.

So with that in mind, here are a few suggestions for interesting foodie destinations.

Bretagne: crêpes

France is famous for her crêpes  but did you know that Brittany is the region where the crêpe comes from?

Everywhere you go in this region you can have crêpes, both savoury and sweet.  The savoury ones are usually called ‘Galette’.

Brittany is a really beautiful region with landscape very similar to Ireland, Cornwall or Wales, and having crêpes is a true bonus.

Provence: nougats

In France, every region has its own speciality did you know that the one for Provence is a sweet call ‘le Nougat’?

It comes from Montélimar a town in the Drôme department.  This sweet is delicious and really addictive!

Sometimes you can have it with another sweet called ‘un callisson’ which comes from another town a bit more south. Both are delicious.

If you go to the Provence during the summer, don’t hesitate to go to the markets to buy lovely fresh fruit & vegetables and your nougat to finish your lunch on a high note!

Alsace: choucroute and flammeküeches

The Alsace region having strong German influence is famous for ‘La choucroute’.

This dish is really rich so it’s best to try it in winter time.

It is made of sauerkraut topped with different types of meat (mainly pork) and potatoes.

Another speciality of Alsace is the flammeküeches (Tarte flambée), it looks like a thin pizza and is delightful.

If you ever visit Strasbourg, the capital of the region, in winter time make sure you try la choucroute or a flammeküeches  in a restaurant after your visit of the famous Strasbourg Christmas market!

We cannot speak about food in France without thinking about wine…

Wine is produced almost everywhere in France.

The region of Champagne-Ardennes, for example, produces mainly champagne, the Loire valley has a lot of wine distilleries and, of course, the region of Bordeaux produces red wine.

You can basically go anywhere in France and find excellent wine. Enjoy!
