Best Holiday Spots in France – Active Holidays [4 of 5]

If your idea of a holiday consists of climbing up and down the mountains, enjoying water sports and avoiding sitting in one place even for a few minutes at all costs, then France has to be your destination of choice.

With its extensive coastline, mountainous areas and great weather conditions, it’s an active holiday-maker’s paradise.

Here 4 suggestions to inspire you:

Gorges du Verdon: canoe

Did you know that France has its own canyon?

The Gorges du Verdon is situated in the south-east of France in the region of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

The river has a majestic turquoise-green shade of colour and is a perfect spot to go if you love water-sports.

Here you can practice canoeing, kayaking, rafting among other sports.

We always think of Corsica as a place to go to the beach, but did you know that it hosts the biggest and hardest hike in Europe?

The GR20 is a 15-day trek in the mountains of Corsica.

The trek takes you from the North to the very South of the island.

The summer is probably the best time to do it as there is no snow in the mountains, but be careful with the heat and storms!

You have to be incredibly fit physically and mentally in order to do the randonnée but it is worth the effort, as you will be rewarded with amazing views and an enormous sense of achievement (that is, if you are not among the 75%  who do not finish the trail…)

You’ve always dreamt about going to Australia to surf…?

… but why not trying out Biarritz and its surf conditions in the Atlantic Ocean?

Biarritz is in the south west of France, close to the border with Spain.

Every year, the town hosts surf tournaments, but even if you are just an amateur you can surf here.

And if you don’t, you can always go to the beach or play the Basque pelota, rugby or golf.

Biarritz is a really suitable place for active holidays!

France has a lot of high mountains and is, of course, a perfect place for those, who, come winter months, take a flight somewhere snowy…

There are thousands of different ski resorts to choose from – some really fancy and expensive, like Courchevelle (the St Tropez of the Alps), others very modern and huge like Val Thorens.

Even if you are not a great skier, you can go to smaller resorts and it is just as lovely, especially if you are travelling with young children.

And if you are not into skiing at all, then the Alps is still a nice place to go in the summer to do a bit of hiking, cycling or even some water sports…
