An exhibition of paintings and etchings

I have lived and worked in France for a very long time. I am fascinated by life in France – its charm, colours, light, people and architecture. However, I have Irish roots – my grandfather was originally from Cork – therefore I am very pleased to exhibit my work at the Alliance Française de Cork.

Born in Canada, I completed my art studies – painting, drawing and etching  - at the College of Art in Ontario.

I am a figurative painter – etcher. I spend a lot of time watching and drawing people –  I love human comedy. I draw passers-by I see on the streets, in the parks, and on the seaside –  people are sometimes so inconspicuous and sometimes so colourful. In my work I depict people I have seen in Belleville, Trouville, Biarritz, Arcueil, Mantes la Jolie … My watercolours express the love of life through warm colours and a beautiful light.

I am interested in western and oriental artistic traditions of the past and also draw inspiration from the work of Gauguin, Bonnard, Vuillard, Dufy, Feininger -I find a special emotion in the light and the colours of their work.

In my etchings I like adapting some traditions of the past, for example the Ukiyo-e and the Kakemono, or the islamic engravings from 16th and 17th centuries.

In my etchings, I use several techniques: engraving, aquatint, sugar-lift, scraping, drypoint, impressions dans le vernis mou, photoengraving, colour and relief.
