CHASING BUTTERFLIES PAR NELL COLLINS
Chasing butterflies is a new body of works by Nell Collins that comprises of acrylic on canvas with mixed media.
The theme of the pieces refers to the chase of the ephemeral : chasing love, chasing elements that cannot be caught but just touched for a moment before they slip away to be again just out of fingertip reach.
Nell draws her inspiration for the paintings from the birth of her second daughter, who appears to be a sprite-like creature, a butterfly that flutters all colours and light, a delicate fragile being who changes quickly and is every day a new being to be discovered.
Nell chooses bright and striking colours, fluorescent and glittering materials to give an overall impression of otherworldness – a world of magic and fairies which sparkles with humour and playfulness. The works are not flat or unidimensional but contain hidden elements that can only be discovered by close examination.
Several characters run through the pieces, the infant and mother, the lovers, flowers, hearts, animals, humans, faces and bodies. They row boats, ride bicycles, run, swim and fly infusing the canvas with energy.
This body of work is a continuation of exploration into the hidden side of life, the sudden eccentricities that are interwoven through the fabric of daily existence. The things that dart just out of our field of vision, in short – the intangible world, the world of butterflies…
